If Lucca went to Kansas... by CysTrombone

Nov 8, 2007

... would this be an issue? How many times have ISU players been ruled ineligible for minor infractions when players for Kansas can admit to be paid to play by other teams and be given a slap on the wrist or less?

Nikola Dragovic? by bender

Nov 7, 2007

Why exactly was Lucca Staiger suspended for the whole season for playing on a team that paid a couple of its players, while Nikola Dragovic (UCLA), who made the very same \"mistake\", only received a 10 game suspension last season? Did the NCAA tightened its rules within a year, or what?

please reinstate Lucca by necromancy

Nov 7, 2007

He\'s a good kid who tried to do everything right, who take pains to research and follow guidelines to ensure his NCAA eligibility, who took no compensation for playing, whose (not wealthy) parents paid $500/month for him to play on a club, and whose dream was to play college ball in the United States. He made great sacrifices to come here and play. Please, in the true spirit of college athletics, please reverse this inane ruling.

suggest that ISU get Neil Harl to come back from retirement to take on the NCAA - as an incredibly gifted attorney, I\'m sure he can show the NCAA officials the errors of their rules interpretations.

Four strikes against the NCAA clearinghouse by photomuse

Nov 6, 2007

Strike one: Lucca researched past NCAA rulings before choosing his club team to assure his ability to attend college in the USA under a basketball scholarship.

Strike two: The rule used for the NCAA ruling was instated after Lucca left the team.

Strike three: Lucca never recieved money or benefits from the club team in question. He is essentially being punished for others actions.

Strike four: The team is considered an amature club team by the german government. It consists of high school students and a couple of past-their-prime former NCAA players.

Seems So Unfair by Wesley

You plan to play college ball in the U S for four years, you research all the rules, you ask all the coaches if you have done right, you come to the States to play ball and accept a scholarship. One week before your college career begins, the NCAA tells everyone you have violated their version of what constitutes an amateur. Something is wrong with the rule when yuo lose elgibility after you have received no money to play in Germany. Not fair

Once a Cyclone - Always a Cyclone by Jeremy - CycloneFanatic.com

Lucca is a stand-up guy and to try and punish him for something he had absolutely no control over is foolish. Lucca is a better person than about 95% of the players that get by with no punishment for things far worse than this. Lucca is a Cyclone and I for one will do whatever possible to help support him through this injustice!

NCAA and Grandfather Rules by Bryceman

Nov 5, 2007

This was a brand new committee appointed to rule in the area of what constittutes an amateur. Lucca played on a German team from ages 16-18 and then last year on a US hiugh school team. Two U S ex-college players of low level talent were on his German club team. Apparently they received funding beyond limits of whatr this new committee deems acceptable. Therefore, he and other Eyropeans lose a year eligibility because the rules were changed in midstream. He received no money that violated rules back in 03-05. To be fair which the NCAA portends to be, a grandfather clause should have been utilized. Lucca was caught by a private NCAA system which tries to control other sports programs around the world such as in Germany. This is like trying to tax revenue by a new 2007 IRS rule back on what we made in 2003. This makes little sense to me. Go Lucca.

Injustice by Kyle

Nov 4, 2007

I have yet to see anyone defend this ruling as fair and just. The NCAA should be in the business of ensuring fairness, consistency, and opportunity for young people. This ruling does not further any of any of these objectives. Instead we get an unpredictable, unfair ruling that is inconsistent with past decisions and hurts two young men who did nothing wrong.

Lucca by Cyclonepride

Nov 4, 2007

I could be wrong here, but I believe that this rule went into effect after Lucca had already left that team. That would make it an ex post facto ruling, and therefore very much contrary to western morality in general. Whatever happened to grandfathering people in after a ruling such as this? Give the kid a warning, and make it clear for those who could be affected in the future. Ridiculous!

keep the chant alive by hiwhatis

Nov 3, 2007

Keep chanting the Free Lucca cheer at games. The more we say it the more people hear it and then they\'ll be informed of the injustice of this situation. I think we should also do this at football games. Let him know that we want and need him here.

Why Lucca Deserves Our Support by CycloneForLife

Nov 3, 2007

Because he could have gone almost anywhere in the world to play basketball and he chose to come to Ames, Iowa. That makes him a Cyclone, and that is why we will all stand with him. Free Lucca!
